Update: Sept. 8 — “Lance Armstrong coming out of retirement in 2009?”

Nothing beats a bicycle racers' conditioning to win at the Tour de France. But ever since Greg Lemond put away Laurent Fignon in 1989 with time trial aero bars, technology has played a big part too.

This year, Trek Bicycles has rolled out improved bicycles for Lance Armstrong. One, the Trek TTX, left, is a time trial bike that Armstrong rode in the first stage of the Tour de France today.

The TTX features one-piece Bontrager aero bars made of OCLV carbon, a fork and frame design that further eliminates drag, and OCLV honeycomb at top tube and bottom bracket junctions. More information is available on the bike in Trek press release on the TTX.

The “everyday” bike that Armstrong will ride in the Tour de France this year is a Madone SSLx, right, similar to the one he rode last year but with some refinements. Trek talks about its Madone SSLx in a press release.

Trek Bicycles touts its TTX and Madone SSLx used by Lance Armstrong at its website.

Cycle Lab also has the goods on the Trek TTX, which Armstrong first used at the Dauphiné Libéré.

Meanwhile, Trek is selling replicas of the Madone that Armstrong rode into Paris in 2004.
