See Greg ride. America's first Tour de France winner Greg LeMond is cycling in this year's Dam2Dam Thumbs Up! Bike Tour, scheduled to begin Sept. 30 in Wenatchee, Washington.
The bicycle tour, featuring 25-, 50-, or 100-mile routes follows the Columbia River between Rocky Reach Dam and Wells Dam to the north.
The bike ride is a fund-raiser for the Mike Utley Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. It's namesake, Mike Utley, is a former Detroit Lions football player who was paralyzed during a game against the Los Angeles Rams in 1991.
Not only does the foundation raise money to pay for spinal cord injury research, it also educates people in wheelchairs how to be independent and self-sufficient and teaches them the importance of rehabilitation.
This isn't LeMond's first charity bike ride of the year. Last month, LeMond joined some 4,000 cyclists in the Pan-Mass Challenge in Massachusetts. That is the nation's largest fund-raiser on wheels, raising $23 million last year alone for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund.
LeMond also is the honorary chairman of the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure, a series of cycling events held in 80 cities nationwide.
Cyclists in the Dam2Dam Thumbs Up! bike ride can register anytime for $75; they'll get a jacket, end-of-ride barbecue and ride support. Those raising additional pledges for the ride are eligible for prizes.
Day-of-ride registration is at Lincoln Rock State Park on Highway 97 in East Wenatchee; online registration is also available at the bike tour website.
