Cadel Evans withdraws from Olympic time trial; knee injury

The bad luck stories for Australia's Cadel Evans continue to mount up.

Even though he finished in second place overall at the 2008 Tour de France last week, he joined the post-race partying anyway and slipped and fell on a wet floor, injuring his knee.

Evans immediately refuted rumours that he had severely injured his knee and wouldn't be able to compete in the Beijing Olympics that start next weekend. Since then, however, the knee has become swollen and he realized he wouldn't be able to compete at his peak in the individual time trial on Wednesday, Aug. 13 …

Lance Armstrong on roster of Leadville 100 this year

What did I do in the olden days when a promising relationship turned sour?  Go for a nice long bike ride.

This morning I read Lance Armstrong and Kate Hudson decided to part ways, and this afternoon I hear that Armstrong plans to compete in the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race on Aug. 9.

Maybe it's just a coincidence. Armstrong said he was going to do the mountain bike race last year, but he had to cancel when another committment arose. Floyd Landis did ride last year, and finished second place to David Wiens…

Tour de Fat comes to Seattle this weekend

This Saturday the Tour de Fat rolls into Seattle's Gas Works Park. Bicycling enthusiasts can join in a parade, participate in challenging bike contests, and enjoy entertainment from the Portland-based Sprockettes bicycle dance troupe, left.

The New Belgium Brewery's tour is visiting 11 cities throughout the West this summer where it mixes good fun with a chance to raise funds for local bike-related groups — in Seattle that's Bike Works and Bike Alliance of Washington.

Tour de Fat opens with a bike parade out the Burke Gilman Trail toward Golden Gardens that leaves at 10 a.m. Participants are invited to decorate their bikes and wear outrageous costumes …

Olympic condom advertising

The Olympics makes a lot of money off sponsorships, but I don't think there's an “Official Condom of the 2008 Olympics” yet.

According to the blog Gawker, though, Chinese condom-maker Elasun is going for the gold with some Olympic-inspired condom advertising.

It gives a whole new perspective to the race for the finish line or riding the time trial in a skinsuit. …

Critical Mass “undermining” efforts to improve bicycling — Cascade

In a carefully worded statement, the Cascade Bicycle Club has weighed in on the Friday night dust up between a motorist and some cyclists at the Critical Mass ride in Seattle.

Seattle's two daily newspapers also followed up on their reporting on the incident, with the P-I's article citing some of the shortcomings of bicycle facilities in the city and the Seattle Times interviewing the motorist.

Cascade is one of the largest bicycle clubs in the US with a membership of some 9,500 cyclists and a calendar full of bike rides and events, as well as bike education and advocacy projects. The statement recognizes that the monthly Critical Mass rides can be a “powerful reminder of the disparity” of public accommodations for bicycles and motor vehicles. However ….

Pedaling across the US for a purpose

I've been clued into two independent cross-country bicycle tours recently that some young men are taking to raise funds and awareness and favorite causes.

Both are blogging about their adventures. One tour, heading east, ends with this weekend Pan Mass Challenge. The other, heading west, is entering its final stretch. It makes for some interesting reading if you're not out on the road yourself.

Pan USA Challenge

The two brothers, Justin and Jamie Merolla, on the Pan USA Challenge last blogged in from Christianburg, Virginia. They were celebrating the last of their hurdles, the huge climb out of Vesuvius that summits at the Blue Ridge Parkway …
