UCI provisionally suspends the Spanish cyclist

With all eyes focused on the grand jury investigating allegations that Lance Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs, now comes shocking news that Alberto Contador failed a doping control test during the closing stages of the 2010 Tour de France.

Three-time Tour champion Contador, through a spokesman, says that food contamination must be the culprit. He reiterated that position at a press conference on Thursday near his home in Spain.

The UCI, pro cycling's governing body, has “formally and provisionally suspended” Contador. It says further study is needed before any conclusion can be drawn.

The failed drug test was taken on July 21, a rest day in the Pyrenees for the peloton. The next day, Stage 17, saw Andy Schleck attack Contador numerous times on the Col de Tourmalet in an attempt to win back an 8-second deficit ….

Don't you think your kids would enjoy riding their bikes through the woods this weekend? It just so happens that Saturday is International Take Your Kid Mountain Biking Day.

In the Seattle area, the Trips for Kids program by Cascade Bicycle Club and Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance are hosting a free guided ride and jump jam at Duthie Hill Park near Issaquah and Sammamish.

Jill Kintner, (above right) the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in BMX and former Kirkland resident, will be among those on hand to ride with the kids ….

Lessons learned on bike travels passed along to students

Four Californians are teaching sustainability by example as they travel by bicycle around the US and make presentations at schools along the way.

The four cyclists — Aaron Viducich, Sara Dykman, Tommy Viducich and Matt Schiff – have logged some 5,500 miles on their estimated 15,000-mile journey around the lower 48 states and Alaska.

More importantly, they've spoken with about 1,500 students in more than 30 presentations over the past four months. …

Phinney wins world under-23 time trial title; Pooley wins women's TT

US cyclist Taylor Phinney added the under-23 world time trial title to his resume on Wednesday, less than two weeks after winning the USA Cycling pro time trial championship in Greenville, SC.

The 20-year-old Trek-Livestrong development team cyclist won the 19.7-mile time trial gold medal in Geelong, Australia, by 1.9 seconds over Australia's Luke Durbridge.

Later, Emma Pooley of Great Britain won the women's time trial gold medal by 15 seconds over Judit Arndt of Germany. US cyclist Amber Neben finished just out of medal contention in 4th place ….

Rails-to-Trails petitions AAA on bicycle and pedestrian projects

Are you a member of the American Automobile Association? It's OK. Lots of bicyclists, myself included, are members.

We own cars and like the security of the roadside assistance that the club offers, as well as the travel and insurance coverage services.

Now the Rails to Trails Conservancy is concerned about a position taken by the AAA's Mid-Atlantic Chapter to remove funding for trails, and other biking and walking projects, from the federal Highway Trust Fund. That segment of the transportation budget has been the source of funding for such balanced transportation projects since 1991.

RTC is asking bicyclists and pedestrians to sign a petition to AAA seeking the auto club's support

Update: Sept. 28, 2010 — St. Charles County councilmembers voted down a proposed ban on bicycle-riding on some county roads

After a series of public hearings in which the bicycling public had its say, a bill to ban bicycle riding on several roads in St. Charles County, Missouri, has lost the support of most councilmembers.

Bicycling advocates warn, however, that cyclists aren't rolling onto smooth roads yet. The proposed ban prompted several other bills that pose unwarranted restrictions on bicyclists.

The bill was introduced in July by County Councilman Joe Brazil and was aimed at narrow, two-lane, shoulderless roads in the southwestern part of the county …

Never too old to ride a bicycle; extreme example is 96-year-old

Think you're too old to take a bicycle tour or long-distance bike ride? You're not.

The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) recently published its online survey of 5,900 cyclists from the summer of 2010.

The average age was 44.6 years old; 7% of the RAGBRAI cyclists were 65 or older, left.

When I left on my coast-to-coast bicycle travels many years ago, I feared I might be too old. I was 34. It seems laughable now, but bicycling seemed like such a youthful pursuit …..
