Bicycle breakdown on the road? AAA now offers rescue in Pacific NW

AAA Washington begins offering roadside assistance to bicyclists today, getting on board with services offered for more than a year in Oregon and southern Idaho.

The new service covers bicyclists on their travels anywhere in Washington, Idaho, Oregon or British Columbia.

No, AAA has not hired a crack team of bicycle mechanics who can be dispatched on a moments’ notice to fix flats or reinstall dropped chains.

But bicyclists who are AAA members and suffer a mechanical problem can call the roadside assistance number and get a lift for them and their bikes to a safe location.

The distance depends on their membership level: Classic – 5 miles; Plus – 100 miles; Premier – 200 miles. The coverage is part of regular membership. There’s an extra charge for longer distances.

The Seattle Times reports that AAA in Oregon and Southern Idaho has received about 200 road assistance calls from bicyclists since launching the service.

While some chapters of the American Automobile Association have not always been supportive of bicycles in their lobbying agendas, this is certainly a step in the right direction. We’d like to see chapters across the US offer this service to help cyclists on long-distance journeys.
