Walt Krul, one of the inventors of the WITFIT, shows how this four-wheeler is operated. He and his brother, Steve, developed the cycle, which is built in Pasco, Washington. The rider propels the cycle with his arms and legs, and steers by leaning the handlebars. More information is available at their website.

Seattle bike show: RANS comfort bicycle

Normally a manufacturer of recumbents, RANS has entered the comfort bicycle field this year. These bikes -- this one displayed at the Feb. 19 and 20 Seattle bike show -- allow the rider to sit lower, enabling him to stop with feet flat on the ground, and the seat position also reduces hand pressure on the handlebars. Although it looks like a beach cruiser, the bike sports plenty of gearing for hills. More about the RANS product line is available here.

David Hawkins, left, and David Krafchick show the Brake Director, the one-hand power braking system for bicycles. The device allows for smooth front and rear braking using one hand. It's designed for use by those with physical limitations, as well as beginning and experienced riders. Hawkins said cyclocross racers, who make quick dismounts during races, have expressed an interest in it. More informatioin is available at the website.
