View Article  Watch out for phony online bicycle scams

My dad always said, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is." That advice certainly goes for buying bicycles at "inventory clearance" prices online.

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona is issuing an alert about a certain Steve's Cycling Store in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Although the website looks legitimate, the street address houses a Flying J truck stop.

The bicycle shop offers bicycles at extremely low prices -- the entire Trek line goes for $1,000 to $1,300, including a Madrone 5.0. The only problem is, you never get the bike. ...   more »

View Article  18,000 TIME pedals recalled

TIME Sport International is issuing a recall for 18,000 bicycle pedals.

The ball-bearing cap can fail, causing the pedal to come off the crank and the cyclist to lose balance and fall. At least eight injuries have been reported, according to a US Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

The models are: Time RXS Titan Carbon, RXS Carbon, RXS and RXE Bicycle Pedals. ...   more »

View Article  CPSC releases old recall notice

There has been no recall of the Light & Motion batteries, as reported here on Wednesday.

The Light & Motion support page says:

"On October 17, 2006, the CPSC reposted a 3 year old press release for a batch of li-ion batteries. Light & Motion voluntarily and successfully recalled those batteries way back in 2004. The new CPSC post is old news and does NOT affect any current or recently sold batteries (ie batteries sold after October 2004). See below for 2004 recall info. Sorry for any confusion."

(Correction: The Consumer Product Safety Commission inadvertantly released a two-year-old recall announcement. There has been no recent recall of Light & Motion batteries. More info at website.)

The Light & Motion bicycle light company is recalling about 1,700 bike light batteries that can overheat, causing a fire or burn hazard for users.

The batteries were sold with the Light & Motion 2004 ARC Li-Ion HID and comprise  manufacturer date codes of 1003 or 1103. ...   more »

View Article  DIY bamboo bicycle trailer

I'm liking bicycle trailers more and more. I lugged my kids around in a Burley d'Lite 'til they outgrew it. I sold it, then turned around a year later and bought a used Yakima single-wheel trailer for touring and errands -- mainly grocery shopping.

Now I see that a bicycle trailer manufacturer is offering free plans on how to build a bamboo trailer.

UK-based Carry Freedom sells several styles of trailers -- including a dog kennel trailer and a folding trailer. The owners figure that cycling makes the world a better place and trailers make it easier to carry stuff by bike. ...   more »

View Article  Commuter bicycles covered by Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal has discovered that people actually ride their bicycles to work and that bike manufacturers actually build bikes for this purpose.

In a Weekend Journal article (reprinted in full at the C.I.C.L.E. blog), the reporter writes that nearly every bike manufacturer has a new or revised commuter model for 2007.

If you're interested, here are links to the commuter bicycles featured in the Wall Street Journal article so you can learn more about each brand: ...   more »
