The expected sprint in Modesto resulted in an unexpected Stage 4 finish as Francesco Chicchi (right) beat Juan Jose Haedo and Mark Cavendish at the Amgen Tour of California on Wednesday.

The highly touted HTC-Columbia team appeared disorganized in the closing miles and wasn't able to set up its typical lead-out train for star sprinter Cavendish until a few hundred yards before the finish.

Chicchi (Liquigas) and Haedo (Saxo Bank) also appeared near the front and took advantage of the apparent confusion. QuickStep did a lot of the work at the front of the peloton for Tom Boonen, but he wasn't a factor in the finish.

Meanwhile, overall leader David Zabriskie (Garmin-Transitions) finished comfortably in the main group .....   more »
