June 2008

Sequoia Century -- June 1, 2008  A fully supported 112-mile bike ride through the Santa Cruz Mountains. Sponsored by the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club of Palo Alto, it also features 31- and 62-mile options. The main route comprises 9,000 feet of climbing.

Sierra Century -- June 7, 2008 Century and half-century choices for bike riders in the Mother Lode. Both rides start at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphy's; century has nearely 18,000 feet of climbing. Sponsored by Sacramento Wheelmen. (Registration closes May 23, 2008)

Mile High Century -- June 14, 2008   This marks the 25th anniversary of the Lake Almanor Basin Indian Valley bike ride. Three options -- 108, 56 and 33 miles -- are available. All riders get an Elks Lodge spaghetti feed.

Canyon Classic Century -- June 14, 2008  This 102-mile century follows back roads through Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Santa Clara and Alameda counties and includes a 5,200 climb up isolated Del Puerto Canyon and lunch in the Livermore Valley. Options include the Mt. Hamilton/Lick Observatory ride, and 64 and 25 mile rides. (Much of route was Stage 3 of 2008 Amgen Tour of California.) Sponsored by Modesto North Rotary.

Best of the Bay -- June 21, 2008  This mountainous super-century follows the same route at Stage 2 of the 2006 Tour of California. Options include with or without the killer Sierra Road climb. Starts at Orinda Community Park. Sponsored by Cherry City Cyclists of San Leandro.

Gene Cerise Memorial Country Coast Classic Bike Ride -- June 21, 2008  Bicycle riders follow scenic routes along the central Pacific Coast and mountains around Cambria. Also options of 50 and 25 miles. Sponsored by the YMCA of San Luis Obispo County.

Breathe Easy Rides; Charity rides for the American Lung Association of California -- June 28, 2008, for Bay Area bike ride; or June 27-29, 2008, for wine country ride around Santa Barbara. (See also the California Ride Calendar for May 2008)

Climb to Kaiser -- June 28, 2008   The bike ride has been rated as one of the 10 toughest by Bicycling magazine. The main ride climbs 13,000 feet in 155 miles; there's also the Tollhouse Century and the Millerton Metric Century. Sponsored by the Fresno Cycling Club.

Giro de Peninsula -- June 28, 2008  Five bike route options are available to cyclists, from 100 miles to an easy 30-kilometer ride. Loop rides begin at the Bay Meadows Race Course in San Mateo; benefits the Festa Foundation for Bay Area people with disabilities.
