Across State Bicycle Tours (M)

Maine  Trek Across Maine is a three-day fund-raiser for the Maine Lung Association that routes bicyclists 180 miles across the state. The 2010 bike ride begins at the Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel and ends in Belfast. Overnight stops at University of Maine in Farmington and Colby College. Dates: June 18-20, 2010.

MOOSA -- Maine's Original Outstanding Super Adventure also touches on Canada and visits parts of Vermont and New Hampshire. Dates:  June 26 - July 2, 2010.

Maine Bike Rally -- The bike rally celebrates its 22st anniversary in Brunswick. Many choices of bike rides over the three-day event. Sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Dates: July 9 - 11, 2010.

Maryland  

Yockatomac Trek   follows the C&O Canal and Great Allegheny Passage for a bad & breakfast bike tour from Washington DC to Pittsburgh, PA. The organizers handle the route and logistics of forwarding luggage; the riders must make their own reservations at pre-selected B&Bs along the route. Usual 335 miles by canal towpath and rail-to-trail, and another 25 or so miles on roads to B&Bs. Dates: June 13-21, 2009

Georgetown to SteelTown -- The C&O Canal towpath and the the Great Allegheny Passage is the route for bike travelers will take on this off-road bicycle route. The self-contained bike tour begins in Georgetown (Washington DC) and goes to the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Includes rides through Paw Paw Tunnel on the Potomac River and Big Savage railroad tunnel in the Allegheny Mountains. Camping and indoor accommodations; 338 miles. Offered by the non-profit Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: May 15 - May 22, 2010.

C&O Canal/GAP -- This is a fully supported bike ride along the canal to Cumberland and then along the GAP rail-to-trail bike path to Pittsburgh. Camping and indoor accommodations. Offered by Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: Sept. 25 - Oct. 2, 2010.

C&O Family -- Oriented to parents and their children, this tour starts in Cumberland, MD, and take a slow pace to Washington DC. Riders will explore historic landmarks and activities along the way. Fully supported by Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: July 10 - 16, 2010.

Tour Du Port -- A day of  bicycling in and around Baltimore. Date: Oct. 3, 2010.

Lymphoma Research Ride (Dickerson, MD) A 25- or 50-mile bike ride for survivors, families and friends to raise money for the Lymphoma Research Foundation. Date: Oct 3, 2010.

Massachusetts  The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is a collection of one- and two-day charity bicycle tours across Massachusetts to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The longest cycling tour takes riders from Sturbridge in the west to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. Goal for 2010 is $31 million. Dates: August 7 and 8, 2010 (Register early).

Mass BikePike Tour 2010 rolls out for its third year with a tour of central Massachusetts, starting and ending in Amherst. About 50 miles per day, with longer options. More details in March. Dates: Aug. 5 - 8, 2010.

Michigan  League of Michigan Bicyclists is offering a series of Shoreline Bicycle Tours in 2010. They are the Pedal and Paddle - June 5 & 6, 2010; Sunrise Adventure - June 18-20, 2010; Michigan's Upper Peninsula Tour (MUP) - July 17 - 24, 2010; West - August 7 - 14, 8. 2010. Pedal Across Lower Michigan uses scenic, paved roads ideal for beginning and intermediate cyclists; very kid friendly and ideal for families. The 2010 host cities are South Haven, Ostego, Hastings, Eaton Rapids, Gross Lake, Milan, and Gibraltar. Daily mileages range between 32 to 45 miles, with longer options for those who want the challenge. Dates: June 19 - 25, 2010. 

Michigander Bicycle Tour -- Returns for its 19th year in 2010. Recommended for mountain bikes only for rails-to-trails riding.  Cyclists can choose three different rides. Two day --  July 17 and 19, 2010; Six day -- July 18 - 23, 2010; Seven day --  July 17 - 23, 2010. More details about the route closer to the event at the website. Sponsored by Michigan Trails and Greenway Alliance.

Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw Bicycle Tour (DALMAC) is a four- or five-day ride, covering 300 to 500 miles depending on which of the five routes riders choose. From East Lansing to (or over) the Machinaw Bridge. Limited to about 1,900 riders. Sponsored by the Tri-County Bicycle Association. Dates: 5-Day or Bridge Ride -- Sept. 1 - 5, 2010. Great Lakes Relaxed -- The upper peninsula of Michigan is the destination of this 6-day supported bike tour offered by Adventure Cycling Association. Covers 221 miles. Dates: Sept. 11 - 18, 2010

Great Lakes -- Explore Michigan's upper peninsula on this self-contained bicycle tour offered by Adventure Cycling Association. Covers some 350 miles. Highlights include Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Bay and Mackinac Island, as well as the Soo Locks that connect Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Dates: Sept. 18 - 28, 2010.

Minnesota  Habitat 500 bike ride is a fund-raiser for the Habitat for Humanity Minnesota. The Habitat 500-mile ride in 2010 is a loop that begins and ends in Sandstone; other host cities are Isle, Hill City, Grand Rapids, Hibbing and Esco. Dates: July 11 - 17, 2010.

Red Ribbon Ride -- is a 300-mile bicycle tour fund-raiser for Minnesota AIDS service organizations. Starts at Mall of America in Bloomington, to Lake City, to Rochester, to Northfield with a closing ceremony at the state capitol is St. Paul. Dates: July 15 - 18, 2010.

MS TRAM Bike Tour -- The fund-raiser for the Minnesota chapter of the MS Society is a week-long supported bike ride around the central lakes region of the state. Visits to Alexandria, Little Falls, Pequot Lakes, Wadena, and Fergus Falls. No mileage available. Dates:  July 25 - 30, 2010.

Bicycling Around Minnesota visits the northwestern part of the state in its fifth year. The loop starts and ends in Cloquet. Register early -- limited to 275 riders; registration opens Feb. 15. Dates: Aug. 18 - 21, 2010.

Mississippi  At least three private companies offer bicycle tours, all of which include at least some riding on the Natchez Trace. Check out Classic Adventures, Woman Tours, Black Bear Adventures.

Missouri  

Katy Trail Relaxed  -- This bike tour covers 191 miles of the Katy rail-trail through Missouri. Five days of cycling starting in St. Charles. Follows the Lewis and Clark Route up the Missouri River. Supported bike tour offered by Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: May 15 - 21, 2010.

The Katy Trail Ride (also known as "Catch the Katy") is a 225-mile ride from Clinton to St. Charles on the nation's longest rail-to-trail route. Mountain bicycles and hybrids are recommended as the surface is crushed limestone. The ride is limited to 300 cyclists. Dates: June 21 - 25, 2010.

Cycle Route 66 - America's Mother Road is the latest week-long bicycle ride offered by the Gateway Council of Hostelling International USA. The tour covers 270 miles of the original highway. It starts at the Route 66 State Park in Eureka, with overnights in Cuba, St. Robert, Lebanon, Springfield and Carthage. Dates: Oct. 10 - 15, 2010. Other Missouri bike rides:

Moonlight Ramble -- A nighttime ride through St. Louis, starting at the Soldiers Memorial Plaza. About 18 miles. States at 8  p.m.  Date: Aug. 21, 2010.

Montana 

Cycle Montana bike tour loop begins in Bozeman and takes in the Tobacco Root Mountains before visiting Virginia City and Nevada City ghost towns. The ranching town of Dillon and Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway are on the itinerary before the climb to the Continental Divide, followed by visits to Butte and Bozeman. Fully supported, presented by nonprofit Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: June 19 - 26, 2010.

Cycle Divide Montana -- This fully supported bike tour of the Great Mountains Divide Route in Montana allows cyclists to climb without the carrying the load. Offered by the non-profit Adventure Cycling Association, the 208-mile tour leaves from Whitefish, Montana. Camping. Dirt roads. Dates: July 11 - 17, 2010.
