Across State Bicycle Tours (M) Dates for 2008 in bold Maine Trek Across Maine is a three-day fund-raiser for the Maine Lung Association that routes bicyclists 180 miles across the state. The 2006 ride begins at the Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel and ends at the Owls Head Transportation Museum, home of many 19th and 20th century bicycles. Dates: June 13-15, 2008. Maine Bike Rally marks the League of American Bicyclists' National Rally. More than 30 bike rides from which to choose in the Fryeburg area. Dates: July 11-13, 2008. Maryland Cycle Across Maryland bases its four-day bicycling event at St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, near Hagerstown. In addition to daily rides from the hom base, there are bicycle classes, movies, entertainment and good food. Dates: July 24-27, 2008. This is the 20th year for Cycle Across Maryland, and the last year it's sponsored by One Less Car.
C&O Canal/Great Allegheny Passage is an off-road bicycle ride on historic canal towpaths and old railroad right-of-ways all the way from Washington DC to the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Includes rides through Paw Paw Tunnel on the Potomac River and Big Savage railroad tunnel in the Allegheny Mountains. Offered by the non-profit Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: June 7-14, 2008 and September 20-27, 2008. See also Peaks of Otter bike tour under Virginia Yockatomac Trek 2008 follows the C&O Canal and Great Allegheny Passage for a bad & breakfast bike tour from Washington DC to Pittsburgh, PA. The organizers handle the route and logistics of forwarding luggage; the riders must make their own reservations at pre-selected B&Bs along the route. Usual 335 miles by canal towpath and rail-to-trail, and another 25 or so miles on roads to B&Bs. Dates: June 14-22, 2008 Massachusetts The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is a collection of one- and two-day charity bicycle tours across Massachusetts to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The longest cycling tour takes riders from Sturbridge in the west to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. Dates: August 2 and 3, 2008. Mass BikePike Tour 2008 launched in 2007 with a four-day bicycle tour from Concord to Northampton with overnight stops in Northbridge, Sturbridge and Ware. Total mileage varies from 120 to 260, depending on the daily options that range from 30 to 65 miles. Limited to 75 riders. Dates: August 14-17, 2008. Michigan League of Michigan Bicyclists is offering a series of Shoreline Bicycle Tours in 2008. They are the Pedal and Paddle - May 31 to June 1, 2008; Sunrise Adventure - June 13 to 15, 2008; Michigan's Upper Peninsula Tour (MUP) July 19 to 26, 2008; West - August 3 to 9; One Day Ride Across Michigan (ODRAM) - September 6. Details not firmed up; details later at the League of Michigan Bicyclists website for more information and registration for all these rides. Michigander Bicycle Tour is back again in 2008 after 17 years. Recommended for mountain bikes only for rails-to-trails riding. Cyclists can choose three different rides. Two day -- Musketawa Trail from Grand Rapids to Muskegon, July 12 and 13, 2008; Six day -- Muskegon to Port Huron area, July 13 to 18, 2008; Seven day -- Grand Rapids to Port Huron, July 12 to 18, 2008. More details closer to the event at the website. Sponsored by Michigan Trails and Greenway Alliance. Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw Bicycle Tour (DALMAC) is a four- or five-day ride, covering 300 to 500 miles depending on which of the five routes riders choose. From East Lansing to (or over) the Machinaw Bridge. Limited to about 1,900 riders. Sponsored by the Tri-County Bicycle Association. Dates: 5-Day or Bridge Ride -- Aug. 27-31, 2008; 4-Day East or West -- Aug. 28-31, 2008. (Details about 2008 ride are available at the website in November 2007. Applications available online in mid February 2008) Pedal Across Lower Michigan uses scenic, paved roads ideal for beginning and intermediate cyclists; very kid friendly and ideal for families. The ride starts in New Buffalo and overnights in Dowagiac, New Sturgis, Coldwater, Hudson, Tecumseh and Monroe. Daily mileages range between 30 to 60 miles, with longer options for those who want the challenge. Dates: June 21 - 27, 2008. Minnesota Habitat 500 bike ride is a fund-raiser for the Habitat for Humanity Minnesota. The 2008 Habitat 500-mile ride in 2008 is a loop that begins and ends in Maple Lake, with overnight stops in Hutchinson, New London, Little Falls, Onamia (2 nights) and Foley. Dates: July 13 - 19, 2008. MS TRAM Bike Tour is a fund-raiser for the Minnesota chapter of the MS Society. Cyclists will pass through Grand Rapids, Chisolm, Biwabik, Two Harbors and Duluth. No mileage available. Dates: July 20 - 25, 2008. Bicycling Across Minnesota is in its third year of touring scenic byways in the state. The 2008 ride will cover about 270 miles of roads through the western praries. Starting in Granite Falls, the route proceeds with Benson, Ortonville, and Montevideo before returning to Granite Falls. Register early -- limited to 150 riders. Dates: Aug. 20-23, 2008. Mississippi At least three private companies offer bicycle tours, all of which include at least some riding on the Natchez Trace. Check out Classic Adventures, Woman Tours, Black Bear Adventures. Missouri Cycle Across Missouri presents the Missouri Heartland Tour in 2008. This 312-mile bike tour features low-traffic roads around central Missouri, as well as a midweek rest day, a KATY Trail option, and a Century option thrown in. Sponsored by the HI-USA Gateway Council. Dates: June 8-13, 2008. While you're at it, check out the century series. The Katy Trail Ride (also known as "Catch the Katy") is a 225-mile ride from Clinton to St. Charles on the nation's longest rail-to-trail route. Mountain bicycles and hybrids are recommended as the surface is crushed limestone. The ride is limited to 300 cyclists. Dates: June 16 - 20, 2008. See also Kansas: Border Raiders ... Montana Cycle Montana A 7-day bike ride that leaves and returns to Missoula. It follows the Bitterroot Valley to Hamilton, up and over the Lost Trail and Chief Joseph passes to Wisdom, then along more river bottoms and over passes to Anaconda, Philipsburg, Drummond and back to Missoula.
