Across State Bicycle Tours (N) Dates for 2008 in bold More bicycle tours: See Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Pennsylvania Nebraska Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) is entitled the Bran 28 Tour of Excellence in 2008. The 454-miles 7-day bicycle tour visits many regions of Nebraska, including the Sand Hills. Starts in Callaway and ends in Yutan with overnights in Dunning, Ainsworth, Butte, Creighton, Petersburg and Shelby. (The website had not been updated in early 2008; check the forums for ride details. )Dates: June 8-14, 2008. Tour de Nebraska launched its first ride in 1988 with just 11 cyclists. The 2008 ride begins and ends in St. Paul with overnights in Burwell, Atkinson, Neligh, and Genoa. Along the way, bicyclists will use such routes as the Loup River Scenic Byway and the hard-packed limestone Cowboy Trail. Dates: June 18-22, 2008. (Also see article in the Journal Star.)
Nevada Tour De Nez Celebration of Cycling features bicycle racing and recreational cycling (including a Sunday century tour) in the foothills around Reno. Dates: June 13-16, 2007. See information and register for cycling at the Tour De Nez website. One Awesome Tour Bike Ride Across Nevada (OATBRAN) is a week-long ride across Basin and Range topography. The 435-mile loop begins and ends in Lake Tahoe with overnights in Fallon, Austin, Eureka, Ely, and Great Basin National Park. Includes stretches on US Highway 50, the loneliest road in America. Dates: Sept. 14-20, 2008. New Hampshire Seacoast Bike Tour is a fund-raiser for the American Lung Association's New Hampshire chapter. The one-day option starts at Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth, along the coast to historic Ogunquit, Maine. The second day returns along a different route. Dates: May 17-18, 2008 New Jersey Scamp 'n' Rascal Cycling Adventures is a private touring outfit that offers a number of bike tour that start in New Jersey and head into Pennsylvania. New Mexico Tour of the Nations is a 5-day bicycle tour through four Native American nations -- Isleta, Laguna, Acoma and Zuni, as well as two national monuments in northern New Mexico. This 259-mile ride is educational as well as recreational; the 200 participants will get tours and spend the night at three pueblos. Also visits to the El Morro National Monument and the Ice Caves. The 210-mile, 3-day ride takes bicyclists up the Hudson River Valley between Manhattan and Saratoga Springs. Dates: June 6-8, 2008.
Five Hundred Miles Across New York (also known as the Great Big FANY Ride) benefits the Double H Ranch, a camp in the Adirondacks for critically ill children. The 2008 route visits Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario, the Erie Canal, Finger Lake wineries, the Adirondack Mountains and wraps up in Saratoga Springs just before horse racing season. Dates: July 20 - 26, 2008. Bon Ton Roulet hosts a 500-mile bicycle tour of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Dates: July 19 - July 26, 2008. Cycling the Erie Canal takes bicycle riders from Buffalo to Albany along the historic and scenic Erie Canal. The 8-day tour covers about 400 miles, about half on bike trail and the rest on low-traffic roads. Dates: July 5 - 13, 2008. Great Hudson Valley Pedal follows the Hudson from Albany to New York City. The 6-day tour covers about 200 miles. Dates: August 11 - 17, 2008. (Read more at "Albany to Manhattan bicycle tour set for August.") North Carolina Cycle North Carolina, sponsored by non-profit North Carolina Amateur Sports, promotes its Mountains to the Coast ride again this year, although riders will attest its not all downhill. Dates: Sept. 27- Oct. 4, 2008. Check website for towns/routes. North Dakota Cycling Around North Dakota in Sakakawea Country (CANDISC) is sponsoring “Bike the Badlands of Teddy Roosevelt." The 420-mile loop tour that will encompass the North Dakota Badlands, Teddy Roosevelt National Park, Lake Sakakawea and the historic wild west town of Medora, featuring the renowned Medora Musical. Dates: August 2 - 8, 2008. Check back in February for registration. Contact the CANDISC website for the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department for more information. Red River International Bike Tour takes in North Dakota, Minnesota and a little bit of Canada. With different route options each day, bicyclists can ride between 254 and 323 miles, depending on the options. Fully supported, except for meals. Presented by the Grand Forks Herald. Dates: June 16-20, 2008. Bike the Border returns for its fourth year in 2008. Check the website for updated information. Dates: June 20 to 22, 2008.
