Rack recalled; hang that bicycle somewhere else

The Picasso Two Bike Folding Rack is being recalled by the Delta Cycle Corp. in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The wall rack with a collapsible shelf isn't sold with sufficient hardware to hold its weight to the wall, causing it to fall. The CPSC reports one incident of a rack falling, but no injuries. ... more »

Memorial bike ride planned for Tom Cuthbertson

A memorial bike ride is planned next month for Tom Cuthbertson, the guy who took a lot of us nonmechanical types by the hand and walked us through basic bicycle maintenance and repair.
He actually didn't stand there and help, offering advice as he looked over our shoulders. He patiently helped us from the pages of his wonderful repair manual, "Anybody's Bike Book." ... more »

Cyclist dies in hit-and-run in Everett

Police in Everett, Washington, are looking for the driver of a car that struck and killed a cyclist, then drove away, Monday night. (UPDATE: He surrendered to police the next day.) Those of you who have seen or heard of DeSalvo bicycle frames might be surprised to learn that it is literally a one-man operation. That man is Mike DeSalvo.
The Ashland (Oregon) Daily Tidings published an article on its hometown frame-builder recently, reporting that DeSalvo sells 110 to 130 bike frames a year from the shop in back of his home. ... more »

The Great Allegheny Passage sounds like something blazed for grisly pioneers in deerskin, not cyclists in spandex.
But a group of folks from everyday walks of life is creating this rail-to-trail route.
They say that as early as 2006 it will carry cyclists all the way from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Cumberland, Maryland, a distance of about 150 miles.
At Cumberland, cyclists can pick up the C&O Canal towpath, which is an ever-descending path along the Potomac River all the way to Washington DC ...

Author of Oregon's bicycle bill dies

Donald Stathos, the former legislator who penned Oregon's bicycle law, died Thursday at age 81.
The Republican state representative was responsible for Oregon's law that set aside 1 percent of all state highway funds to build and take care of bike and hike paths.

For those of you at home who are keeping score, the Lance Armstrong bike beat the Roberto Heras bike in the charity auction sweepstakes this week.

A memorial bike ride for elementary school teacher Michelle Mazzei is scheduled in Menlo Park, California, on Sunday.

I quickly consulted the calendar when I saw the item on the E-Composites website that a bicycle frame-maker was using bamboo. I confirmed it wasn't April Fool's Day.

I picked up the story of Helen Roberts when she left Colorado to ride her bicycle to Hurricane Katrina's destruction zone.
A city in her area had adopted the small southern Mississippi River town of Pearlington and she felt compelled to volunteer. She bicycled nearly to Baton Rouge, where she caught a ride to Pearlington.

Helen Roberts, the cycling volunteer from Colorado, has reached Baton Rouge where she's awaiting a ride to hurricane-devastated Pearlington, Mississippi. Pearlington is a small river town that's been all but ignored by federal relief agencies.

Cyclists shouldn't be suffering a lot of fear and loathing over the possibilities of male impotence caused by bike saddles. Anyway, isn't anxiety a major cause of erectile dysfunction?

Former Postal doc retracts dopey comments on pro cyclists

Former US Postal Service pro cycling team doctor Prentice Steffens alleged last week that blood doping was common in the peloton.
He retracted those statements over the weekend and apologized to Lance Armstrong, among others.

They didn't get to ride, but the 1,500 cyclists who signed up for the 50-mile final leg of the Tour of Hope accomplished what they set out to do: raise money for cancer research.
Heavy rains, 7.25 inches in two days, according to Operation Gadget, forced cancellation of the Grand Finale of the cross-country bicycling tour to raise funds and awareness in the battle against cancer.

Cycles Gaansari has created a new bicycle brand that helps raise money for bike messengers who've been injured on the job.

North Korea shifts into bicycle production

Forget the nuclear arms race. North Korea is entering the bicycle-making race.
Reuters reports that North Korea has built its first bicycle factory where it plans to produce 300,000 bicycles a year. Some 7 million bicycles are needed in the country, which is short on energy resources.

Yakima Products is recalling its trunk-mounted Mighty Joe 2 and Mighty Joe 3 bicycle racks.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced the recall, which could affect more than 16,000 units.

Battle lines drawn in Canadian bicycle import tax
