The Russell sporting goods firm proudly announced this week that the 350 millionth Bike jock strap (aka athletic supporter) has rolled off the assembly line.
The Arizona Republic announced the company's milestone under the headline: "700 Million Served."
Have you ever wondered how the word Bike ever became associated with jock straps?
Me neither. But the Russell Corporation reports that the Bike Web Company began making the jock strap back in 1874 to provide support for bicycle jockeys riding the ball-busting cobblestone streets of Boston. Those wood and steel bikes were called boneshakers. It later became known as the Bike jock strap -- and the rest is history.
Russell, which has its hands in all lines of sports to the tune of $1.3 billion in sales, acquired the Bike Athletic Company in 2003.
