View Article  Lance Armstrong back in the saddle on Sunday

All eyes will be on Lance Armstrong next week when returns to competitive cycling with the 8-day Dauphiné Libéré in France, June 5 through 12.

It's only one of the few multi-day races he's joined this year; he dropped out of the Paris-Nice in the spring and rode in support of Discovery Channel teammate Tom Danielson a few weeks later when he ...   more »

Sales of "Made in Taiwan" bicycles and bike parts continued to roll along in the first three months of 2005.

The Chinese Economic News Service reports bicycle output up 24% and parts -- such as wheel rims, spokes and lights --  up 23%.

The quarterly report also says shipment delays by Shimano, Japan largest bike component manufacturer, forced Taiwan bike ...   more »

The three-week running of the Italian soap opera -- the Giro d' Italia -- ended on Sunday.
Casual viewers will note that Italian Paolo Savoldelli of Discovery Channel's Pro Cycling Team won the overall race, and Alessandro Petacchi took the final 74-mile stage from Albese con Cassano to Milan.   more »

View Article  Biking to lose weight won't weaken bones

If you want to lose weight by riding your bicycle into the ground, go ahead. It won't weaken your bones.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University say that, unlike dieting alone, exercising to lose weight doesn't reduce bone mass, even in people aged 55 and older.

View Article  Bicycle Quote: Paolo Savoldelli, leader in Giro d' Italia

"I broke my nose and jaw in a collision with a motorbike in 2003, got a virus from over-training in 2004 and then had another two accidents after that. I've still got nine screws and a titanium plate in my collar bone. Hopefully I'm being paid back for everything I've been through. Victory in the Giro would mark the end ...   more »

View Article  Giro d' Italia win coming into sight for Disco's Savoldelli

If Paolo Savoldelli can hang on for a few more days, he might have this Giro d' Italia in the bag.

The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team captain -- in the absense of Lance Armstrong -- is beginning to consider a win after retaining the overall leader's pink jersey on Wednesday on the 130-mile bicycle race from Lissone to Varazze. ...   more »

View Article  53rd cross-country tour might be his last

Many cyclists dream about taking their first TransAmerica trip. Some dream about taking their second.
Thomas Beasley dreams that his 53rd will be his last.
The 36-year-old cyclist has crossed the US 52 times from north to south or east to west. As he rides, he stops in towns and cities along the way to raise money for multiple sclerosis....   more »

View Article  President Bush is on his bike: Do not disturb

I printed a "Bicycle Quote" last week made by President Bush's spokesman Scott McClellan after the White House and Congress were evacuated when a small aircraft mistakenly entered restricted airspace.
It didn't end there.
The next day, McClellan had to field more questions about the event and reasons why Bush, who was riding his mountain bike at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, was not immediately ...   more »

View Article  Bicycle "Ride for Silence" mourns fallen riders Wednesday night

Bicycle riders in northwest cities will join those across the US tonight for a Ride for Silence, mourning those killed or injured in accidents with motor vehicles. I've been hearing about this year's Bike Month and Bike to Work Day for weeks. A story in this morning's Detroit Free Press was the first I've read about the Ride for Silence.

View Article  Bike to Work on Friday

The reasons to participate in Bike to Work Day on Friday are too numerous to mention. I'll take a stab at a few:
You'll get to do something you really like on the way to work;
You'll be admired by your slothful co-workers;
You can eat that mid-morning snack guilt-free;
You'll be sticking it to those big oil companies...   more »

It's OK to ride your bicycle out in the middle of the road when it's Bicycle Saturdays or Sundays on Lake Washington Boulevard in Seattle.

The city bans cars from a 4-mile stretch of the lakeside road between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park on occasional weekend days throughout the summer. The first closure was Sunday, although few cyclists took advantage ...   more »

June Curry, the renown "Cookie Lady" of the TransAmerica bicycle route, is busy with the Bike House once again this spring.

Recovering from a stroke she suffered in February (and a broken wrist in April), June needs help to keep the Bike House up and running now. It's no longer a one-woman operation; it's more like a community project. June's ...   more »

View Article  Spinning yarns on wheels; the Bicycle Film Festival

My idea of a bicycle movie has always been "Breaking Away": town kid grows up and beats college kids at their own race -- the Little Indy 500.

Or "American Flyers": kid grows up and beats brother in bicycle race -- after the big brother suffers a brain aneurysm.

Or "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure:" I actually have no idea what that was about.

In any case, you won't find these films at the Bicycle Film Festival in NYC ...   more »

View Article  Time for bicycle tourists to thank the Trail Angels

Would you like to show your appreciation to someone who helped you on a bicycle tour?

Can you think of anyone who:
Took you in on a stormy night;
Let you camp in their back yard;
Gave you and your busted bike a lift into town;
Basically saved your butt on your last bicycle tour?

The Adventure Cycling Association is ...   more »
