Bicycling has had fatal consequences for a North Carolina family.
Three members of the Hedrick family have died while riding their bicycles. Now a fourth is hospitalized after being struck by a hit and run driver in the Salisbury area, about halfway between Charlotte and Greensboro.
Tommy Hedrick, 58, is in fair condition in the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after being struck by a light-colored, four-door Malibu or other GM car. Like his father before him, he rides his red bicycle around the area, often pulling a lawnmower in a wagon to grass-mowing gigs.
The Salisbury Post said Tommy's father, Charlie Hedrick, was riding his bicycle when he was struck and killed by an automobile. Tommy's brother, Ralph, had a seizure while riding his bicycle and was struck and killed by a car in 1995. Tommy's brother-in-law, Bob, was also killed while riding a bicycle.
Salisbury police are asking that anyone with information about the hit-and-run to call 704-638-5333.
