Finger Lakes Loop – The self-contained bicycle tour presented by the nonprofit Adventure Cycling Association visits the Erie Canal and the Finger Lakes region. Mileages and terrain geared to intermediate level cyclists. Leaves from Syracuse for a 323-mile loop. Dates: June 30-July 9, 2013.
Five Hundred Miles Across New York (also known as the Great Big FANY Ride) benefits the Double H Ranch, a camp in the Adirondacks for critically ill children. Check website for route. Dates: July 21-27, 2013.
Bon Ton Roulet hosts a 500-mile bicycle tour of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The loop tour starts in Cortland with overnights in Ithaca, Waltkins Glen, Keuka, Geneva (two nights) and Auburn. Dates: July 21-27, 2013.
Cycling the Erie Canal takes bicycle riders from Buffalo to Albany along the historic and scenic Erie Canal. The 8-day tour covers about 400 miles, about half on bike trail and the rest on low-traffic roads. (Registration opens in January) Dates: July 7-14, 2013.
2013 STIHL Tour des Trees — A week-long bicycle tour to benefit the TREE Fund. The event visits a different part of the US every year; cyclists visited Oregon in 2012. The route in 2013 visits locations in upstate New York and Niagara Falls, as well as crossing the border into Ontario and Toronto. Registration opens Jan. 9, 2013. Dates: July 28-Aug. 3, 2013.
Great Hudson Valley Pedal follows the Hudson from Albany to New York City. The 6-day tour covers about 200 miles. Dates: July 30-Aug. 4, 2013. (Read more at “Albany to Manhattan bicycle tour set for August.”)
Ride to a Wish — Cyclists can choose a challenging 50- or 100-mile bike ride through Tyrrell County, North Carolina, to raise funds to grant a wish to a girl with severe mental and physical handicaps. Make-a-wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina. Date: May 5, 2012
Blue Ridge Bliss– A supported bicycle tour through Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia and North Carolina. Camping. Covers 287 miles; starts and ends in Roanoke, Virginia. Non-profit Adventure Cycling Association. Dates: June 1-7, 2013.
Cycle North Carolina, sponsored by non-profit North Carolina Amateur Sports, promotes its Mountains to the Coast ride again this year, although riders will attest it’s not all downhill. Dates: Sept. 28-Oct. 5, 2013. Check website for towns/routes (registration mid April 2013).
Cycling Around North Dakota in Sakakawea Country (CANDISC) — The 2013 CANDISC bike tour theme is Bicycling the Enchanted Highway. The 370-mile loop bike tour begins and ends in Garrison with overnights in Velva, Willow City, Lake Metigoshe, Towner, Butte and Turtle Lake. Check website for details. Dates: Aug. 3-10, 2013 .
Red River International Bike Tour (RRIBT) takes in North Dakota, Minnesota and a little bit of Canada. With different route options each day, bicyclists can ride between 254 and 323 miles, depending on the options. Fully supported, except for meals. Presented by the Grand Forks Herald. Third year.
