Finding the right bike fit

When bicyclist Joe Kern explained his ability to ride 80 miles on his 80th birthday, he credited a proper bike fit as being one of the major reasons for his longevity in the saddle.

We all probably have a cursory knowledge of bike fit. Primarily it involves saddle height and handlebar reach, but pedal and shoe alignment also comes into play.

Cycling becomes a pain in the butt.

The American Physical Therapy Association is focusing on proper bike fit this month. Erik Moen of Seattle, an association member and an elite cycling coach with the US Cycling Federation, says he first looks to improper bike fit as the culprit when patients complain of cycling related aches and pains.

He recommends the following tips for better bike fit …

How to lead youth bicycle tours

A few weeks ago I wrote about the steps some cycling chaperones and I took to usher 60 middle school age kids along the Sammamish River Trail for a safe 20-mile bike ride.

Little did I know at the time that the Adventure Cycling Association had just released a first-ever youth bicycle guide entitled “Pedal Pioneers: A Guide to Bicycle Travel with Kids.”

Another Armstrong “doping” book; don't look for it in bookstores

The authors of a French book that alleged 2 years ago that Lance Armstrong relied on banned substances during his cycling career have come out with a brand new tome about the same old subject.

As usual, the 7-time Tour de France bike race winner vehemently dismisses the accusations:

“This latest attack will be no different than the first – a sensationalized attempt to cash in on my name and sully my reputation by people who have demonstrated a consistent failure to adhere to the most basic journalistic standards or ethics.”

“L.A. Officiel” by Pierre Ballester and David Walsh focuses on recently disclosed testimony leaked from closed hearings regarding a lawsuit between Armstrong and the SCA Promotions in 2005. …

Tour of Missouri joins US pro bicycle racing schedule for 2007

Move over Tour de Georgia and Tour of California — the Tour of Missouri is joining the ranks of the USA Cycling Professional Tour as an internationally sanctioned bicycle race.

What this means is that top pro teams that compete in Union Cycliste Internationale events in Europe can also ride in the stage race as it winds through Missouri between Kansas City and St. Louis next September.

This is just another indication that interest in bicycle racing is exploding in the US. No more dreary returns like those from the Tour duPont and Tour de Trump.

In February, an estimated 1.3 million bike racing fans watched the inaugural Tour of California, drawing an estimated $100 million into the host cities. The Tour de Georgia draws upwards of 800,000 and had an estimated economic impact of $26 million in 2006.

The newly created …
