Bicycling advocacy jobs: You call this working?

While the lion's share of bicycling advocacy and development work seems to fall to dedicated volunteers, there are quite a few paying gigs in those fields that are being advertised this spring, including three in Seattle.

Two of those are offered by the Cascade Bicycle Club and one by the Bicycle Alliance of Washington. There also are positions in Berkeley and Sonoma County, California, Lansing, Michigan, and Washington, DC.

There's nothing wrong with making a living out of what you love. Check out this list. It's not comprehensive; just a few jobs that I've stumbled across recently:

Seattle

The Cascade Bicycle Club is looking for someone to fill the newly created senior staff position (.pdf) in the Advocacy Department. The person will monitor implemention of pro-bike plans in cities and assist with educating local leaders about bicycle commuting.

Cascade also is looking for a development coordinator (.pdf) to help with event sales, oversee appeal production, update websites and perform other communication functions, coordinate membership booth and other duties.

The Bicycle Alliance of Washington is seeking a bicycle commuter specialist to operate BAW's bike commuter program, oversee King County Metro's lost bike program, and plan participation at expos and other public events.

California

The City of Berkeley is seeking an associate planner (.pdf) to complete the city's first pedestrian plan and implement the city's pedestrian and bicycle plans. Also develop funding proposals and seek grants. Check at human resources.

The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition needs a Safe Routes to School program manager. Some of the duties include preparing funding requests and creating strong relationships with local agencies and businesses to achieve safe routes.

Michigan

The Michigan Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports and Michigan Fitness Foundation is seeking a vice president of active communities (.doc). This executive level position leads program and project teams in a statewide effort to create active community environments.

The fitness foundation also is seeking a contract manager (.pdf) to oversee safe route to school subcontracts with schools, nonprofits and state agencies.

Washington DC

The Rails to Trails Conservancy needs a coordinator of trail development. This person manages the web-based technical assistance resources, tracks and records trail-related information, oversees all the functions related to the trails database, and participates in trail development projects.  Rails to Trails also is seeking people to fill a host of intern positions.
