Eight years ago this morning we watched a terrible event unfold that would bring profound changes to our nation and its foreign policies.

There are several bicycle rides that remember 9/11 and memorialize those who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Here are three in New York, North Carolina and Kentucky.

The Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride that began in 2002 when about a dozen bicyclists, mostly NYPD officers, rode their bikes from the Pentagon in the Washington DC to Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan.

Thor Hushovd wins Stage 3 at Tour of Missouri

Hard work by Team Columbia and Garmin Slipstream didn't pay off at the Tour of Missouri on Wednesday as Norwegian Thor Hushovd survived at the front of a rolling finish into Rolla to take Stage 3.

Columbia's Mark Cavendish couldn't get through to the front of the mass sprint in Rolla. His finish position put him in a virtual tie with Hushovd for the overall race lead.

Tyler Farrar wins stage at Vuelta a Espana bike race

The wait is over for US cyclist Tyler Farrar. The Garmin Slipstream speedster from Wenatchee, Washington, notched up his first ever Grand Tour stage victory on Wednesday at the Vuelta a Espana.

The win came in Caravaca de la Cruz at the end of the 120-mile Stage 11 of the tour of Spain.

Team Liquigas had controlled the charging peloton in the final kilometers, but attacks by Fabian Cancellara, then Oscar Freire, upset their plans.

Farrar rocketed to the front at the close, but no one could pass him.

After a total of five 2nds and 3rds earlier this year in the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, Farrar must be relieved that he finally has a win in a Grand Tour ..

Pennsylvania's Bicycle Man recycled bikes for people near and far

Ernest H. Simpson will surely be missed, not just by his family and friends in his hometown, but by thousands of people in developing nations around the world who ride bicycles he collected and refurbished.

Known locally in Gettysburg as The Bicycle Man, Simpson passed away this summer at the age of 88. He leaves behind a tradition of salvaging discarded and unwanted bikes, fixing them up, and giving them away. We're talking more than 10,000 bicycles.

The Patriot News has a good article about Simpson, and tells how it all started one day when he was walking home from work in the early 1950s and saw a man throwing out a couple of bicycles …
