STP forecast: Pack raingear for second day; bridge delays Saturday from Eastside

A mess of bicycles at first 2008 STP rest stop in Kent

The weather forecast along the 30th anniversary Seattle-to-Portland Bicycle Classic route calls for warm temperatures on Saturday and an increasing chance of rain in southern Washington and northern Oregon on Sunday.

One-day STP bicyclists who plan to ride the entire 200 miles by nightfall Saturday should be safe without raingear or fenders.

Those stopping midway, however, can expect to wake up to a 30% chance of rain in the Centralia area on Sunday and 30% chance thunderstorms in the early afternoon along the Columbia River.

Two-day riders should be OK stowing raingear in their bags for delivery to their overnight spot, then carrying it on Sunday.

The Cascade Bicycle Club is celebrating its 30th annual STP this year with a full complement of 10,000 cyclists. …..

Tour de France rookie Nocentini in yellow; Contador and Armstrong in 2nd and 3rd

Italy's Rinaldo Nocentini jumped 32 places on Stage 7 to take over the yellow jersey at the Tour de France on Friday.

After Fabian Cancellara wore the leader's jersey since the end of the bicycle race's first stage — the last three virtually tied with Lance Armstrong, this first stage in the Pyrenees was expected to usher in a new leader.

But few could have predicted Nocentini, an AG2R cyclist who moved up the rankings by joining a breakaway earlier in the day and surviving to finish in fouth place, 26 seconds behind stage winner Brice Feillu of France.

Meanwhile, the favorites battled it out about three minutes behind. After Cadel Evans attacked in an attempt to make up time he lost earlier in the week, Alberto Contador scampered past him to take over the overall No. 2 spot from Armstrong, who now sits in 3rd place, 2 seconds behind Contador.

Throw in Levi Leipheimer in 4th place, at 39 seconds out of first, and you have an Astana bottleneck high in the General Classification ….

State budget shortfall threatens 2009 Tour of Missouri

(Update: July 11 — The Missouri Tourism Commission reaffirmed its support of the Tour of Missouri on Friday, voting unanimously to retain funding for another year.

The final decision rests with Gov. Jay Nixon, however.)

July 10 — Organizers of the third annual Tour of Missouri are scrambling to find more money for the week-long stage bicycle race after the governor froze state funds for race.

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, one of the race's biggest supporters, is urging cycling enthusiasts to contact Gov. Jay Nixon to request that he reinstate the funding for the Sept. 7-13 event.

Supporters of the Tour of Missouri can leave a phone message at 573-751-5261. Also, here's an email link to Gov. Nixon's office ….

Hushovd wins a wet Stage 6; Cancellara leads Tour de France

Norway's thundering sprinter Thor Hushovd won a tightly contested sprint in Barcelona on Thursday after the peloton took a squeegee to David Millar's hopes of a solo victory on Stage 6 of the Tour de France.

The overall leaders finished intact on the slippery streets of Barcelona as Fabian Cancellara held onto the yellow jersey for another day with Lance Armstrong trailing by less than a second.

Cancellara should savor his last hours in the yellow jersey, however, as the Tour rockets into the Pyrenees on Friday with a mountain top finish at Andorre Arcalis. He's unlikely to survive in the lead as a host of climbers, including four on Astana, will be ready to take over. …

“MS-8” bicyclists go separate ways in response to “no stop” tickets

Would you expect to be ticketed for rolling through a stop sign on a charity bicycle ride?

Eight bicyclists participating in the 700-strong Bike MS: Beyond the Beltway fund-raiser in Virginia earlier this month were ticketed by sheriff's deputies for failure to come to full stops at signs along the route.

No warnings; just a ticket that carries a fine, fees, and 4 points on their driving record.

The cyclists, whose accounts of the tickets are detailed in the Washington Post, the Loudoun Times-Mirror and a lawyer's blog, say they slowed at the intersections and rolled through only when they saw that the coast was clear ….

Historic tour bicycle joins Missoula collection

Just like the Wright Brothers' first airplane that sits in the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, some transportation marvels deserve recognition.

So it is with the triple tandem built by bicycling advocate and enthusiast Bill Bliss.

The bicycle carried Bill and his two daughters, Shannon, 8, and Heather, 7, on a 4,200-mile TransAmerica bike ride in 1976 to commemorate the nation's Bicentennial. It now adorns the entryway to the Adventure Cycling Association headquarters in Missoula, Montana …

Voeckler wins Stage 5; Cancellara wearing yellow at Tour de France

Sometimes the breakaway does survive to the finish at the Tour de France and rewards a long-suffering cyclist with victory.

That's what happened on the 122-mile race from Le Cap d'Agde to Perpignan for Stage 5 on Wednesday when France's Thomas Voeckler once again raised himself from virtual obscurity to win his first-ever stage of the Tour de France.

Fabian Cancellara held onto the yellow jersey for another day, as he's led the race since Stage 1. Lance Armstrong still trails by a fraction of a second.

If you remember Voeckler's name, it's because the improbable hero of France wore the yellow jersey for 10 days back in 2004, beating the odds daily to hold onto the yellow jersey….
