Lance Armstrong will be easy to spot in the Tour Down Under peloton beginning next weekend, regardless of whether he's wearing the leader's jersey.
The 37-year-old comeback cyclist has said he'll be wearing his own black-and-yellow kit during the week-long race and will be riding his own distinctively decorated Trek Madone 6.9 bike.
[Update: Jan. 11 — Armstrong said Saturday morning on Twitter that he'll wear Astana kit in races, but train in Livestrong gear. See the new Astana team jersey that features a yellow Livestrong band on the left sleeve.]
Armstrong is racing on Team Astana for no salary and no bonuses. He has said one of his main purposes in returning to cycling is to draw attention to the global epidemic of cancer. A good way to call attention is to fly the black and yellow colors of LiveStrong. …

Lance Armstrong — at 7 Tour de France championships — will be joined by a host of cycling champions at the 2009 Giro d'Italia.
Carlos Sastre, last year's Tour de France winner, has signed on for the Giro, and Denis Menchov, winner of the Vuelta a Espana in 2005 and 2007 also announced his intention to compete.
Five Giro d'Italia …

There's a trail plan underway that would enable bicyclists to visit dozens of Colonial and Civil War-era historic sites from a single off-road trail.
Bicycling advocates and history buffs are working to link 11 bicycle trails in the mid-Atlantic states to create a 185-mile circular historical bike route.
Called the Grand History Trail, the project would fill in the gaps between trails in Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
Along the way, it would connect the historic cities of Annapolis, Baltimore, Frederick, Gettysburg, Washington and York and points in between, such as Colonial-era settlements and Civil War battlefields …

Here's a photo I shot of cycling personality Bob Roll when he last appeared at the Seattle International Bicycle Expo in 2005.
Not exactly the clean-cut Versus TV commentator that appears on cable, but his humor and stories were just as good, if not better, in person.
Bobke is returning to Seattle to speak at the Cascade Bicycle Club's Friday evening, March 13, special presentation that precedes the bike expo on March 14 and 15. He won't be appearing during the expo like he did four years ago …

A plan to link rails-to-trails in the mid-Atlantic states to form a Grand History Trail. Dark green are existing off-road routes, light green are planned routes, pink are temporary on or off-road routes and red are on-street gaps where no off-road is planned. See the interactive Google map.

Lance Armstrong has put his 447-acre ranch in Dripping Springs on the market, complete with the 4-bedroom, 4 bath home and shared access to Deadman's Hole natural swimming pond.
This isn't the Armstrong estate in Austin that made news over the summer for being the top residential water consumer in the city by a factor of four (since greatly reduced).
This is the ranch about 25 miles from Austin where Armstrong got into trouble with his neighbors for dirtying up the shared swimming hole. Apparently some dams he built on his property diverted some sediment into the pond, which he cleaned up to the tune of $850,000 …

The upcoming issue of Outside magazine tickles our wanderlust with the “The 100 Best Adventure Websites” list.
While we could probably rely on most of these 100 websites at one time or another, I culled through the list to find ones that were the most pertinent for bicyclists.
The editors listed only three websites specifically for bicycling. There are others for shopping, mapping, fitness and event scheduling that bicyclists can use …

The return to pro cycling by Lance Armstrong after three years of retirement puts the 2009 Tour Down Under on the map, but he isn't the only high profile cyclist at the bike race.
Five former Tour Down Under champions will be racing. They are Andre Greipel (2008, Germany) on Team Columbia, Martin Elmiger (2007, Switzerland) on AG2R, Luis Leon Sanchez (2005, Spain) on Caisse Epargne, Michael Rogers (2002, Australia) Team Columbia, and Stuart O'Grady (1999 and 2001, Team Saxo Bank).
The 2006 Tour de France winner, Oscar Pereiro, also will compete for Caisse Epargne …
