Three remarkable feats highlight Stage 8

A trio of sterling performances marked Stage 8 of the Tour de France on Saturday, the first day the peloton has battled in the mountains this year.

Let's start with Portugal's Rui Costa (Movistar), left. He joined a breakaway less than two miles into the 118-mile lumpy route from Aigurande and survived to the mountain-top finish at Super Besse-Sancy for his first Tour de France stage win.

After dropping his three companions in the breakaway on the final climb, Costa outlasted Phillippe Gilbert (Omega) …

US cyclist Chris Horner is out of Tour de France

American cyclist Chris Horner did not start Stage 8 of the Tour de France on Saturday after spending the night in the hospital after his Friday bicycle crash.

The 39-year-old RadioShack team member from Bend, Oregon, was being held for observation after the crash because he suffered a concussion and was clearly disoriented after he was the last bicyclist to cross the finish line.

Team manager Johan Bruyneel left the following message ….

Stage 8: The climbing begins; view of Col de la Croix

Col de la Croix Saint-Robert

Many cyclists in the Tour de France peloton must be slightly relieved that the crowded, lowland farm roads are behind them as they attack some hills in Stage 8.

The 117-mile (189km) stage from Aigurande to Super-Besse Sancy is an ever-climbing route into the Massif Central.

It includes two Category 4 climbs, a Category 2 climb at Col de la Croix Saint-Robert and a Category 3 summit finish ….

STP and naked bicycling in Seattle on Saturday

If you leave a little late for the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic on Saturday and notice that your fellow cyclists are all naked, then you've accidentally joined the wrong bicycle ride.

The World Naked Bicycle Ride is also rolling out in Seattle on Saturday.

The 10,000-strong STP cyclists will be leaving from Husky Stadium — at daybreak for the one-day cyclists and a little later for those making the 200-mile trip in two days. In fact, cyclists that dropped off their luggage early could be leaving from anywhere in the Seattle area.

Meanwhile, the WNBR cyclists are meeting …

Another crash hurts the chances of some Tour favorites

Mid-race crashes continued to spoil the chances of some favorites at the Tour de France on Friday while Mark Cavendish won his second stage this year — the 17th of his career.

Britain's Bradley Wiggins (Sky) abandoned the race with a broken collarbone in a crash that cost many of the favorites — including Americans Levi Leipheimer and Chris Horner (RadioShack) — at least 3 minutes.

Meanwhile, Norway's Thor Hushovd stayed away from the disaster and survived to hold onto the yellow jersey for another day. He has finished in the top 10 every stage so far.

Friday's big crash occurred about 37km from the finish ….

Norway hailed at Tour de France while US favorite drops back

The focus of the Tour de France seems to have turned to Norway as her favorite cycling sons Edvald Boasson Hagen and Thor Hushovd were celebrated in Lisieux on Thursday at the completion of Stage 6.

Boasson Hagen (Team Sky), 26, won his first-ever stage on Thursday while Hushovd (Garmin-Cervelo) continued to hold onto the overall leader's yellow jersey that he's worn since Stage 2.

Things got a little blurry for American cyclist Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack), however. He lost control of his bike at the side the road and “surfed” along a guardrail for a few feet before falling about 4.5 miles from the finish.

The crash caused the Santa Rosa cyclist to lose serious time….

Cyclists crash throughout Stage 5 at Tour de France

English speedster Mark Cavendish emerged from a crash-plagued Stage 5 to win his first Tour de France stage this year and the 16th in his career.

The “Manx Missile” sprinted past 8 or 9 cyclists in the final 150 yards to win the stage in Cap Fréhel on the blustery French coast.

Norway's Thor Hushovd finished in the tight bunch in the sprint, enabling the Garmin-Cervelo cyclist to hold onto the yellow jersey for another day.

Although the sprint was free of crashes …

Proposed bicycling ban at Idaho wildlife refuge could have far-reaching impacts

Although the automobile was making headway in the early 20th century, many folks still used bicycles when President Teddy Roosevelt established the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge in 1909.

There was nothing in his executive order about bicycles when he set up the bird refuge on Lake Lowell near Nampa in southwestern Idaho.

Now, that all might change.

A blog reader wrote to say that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is updating its Comprehensive Conservation Plan ….

Favorites battle for win on Stage 4 of Tour de France

The 4th stage out of 21 may seem a little early for the Tour de France contenders to test each other, but that's what happened on a rainy Tuesday in the summit finish Mûr-de-Bretagne.

Scoring well in this early test were Cadel Evans and Alberto Contador, last year's winner. Not doing so well was Andy Schleck, who finished second in 2010 and was considered Contador's chief rival.

Contador (Saxobank), who has been languishing at 1:42 behind the yellow jersey, issued the challenge ….
