The ups and downs at the Vuelta a Espana

Cyclists at the Vuelta a Espana are proving their expertise in uphill and downhill cycling.

Team Katusha's Joaquin Rodriguez proved he had the strongest legs on Wednesday when he attacked on a 24% ramp in Valdepeñas de Jaén to win Stage 5.

On Thursday, four members of the Liquigas squad, and one from Movistar, attacked on the closing downhill run …

By George! Big win in Colorado

It's only three days old, but this USA Pro Cycling Championship has been full of surprises.

The latest is George Hincapie's (left) sprint finish victory — at 8,000 feet elevation — to end Stage 2 in Aspen on Wednesday.

Although he beat Tejay Van Garderen to the line — a cyclist 15 years his junior, the HTC Highroad cyclist, above right, can find solace in taking the overall leader's yellow jersey.

RadioShack's Levi Leipheimer, who took the yellow jersey Tuesday on an uncharacteristic uphill attack at the finish in Crested Butte, dropped to fourth place overall. Hincapie raised himself to 2nd overall, followed by Tom Danielson (Garmin Cervelo) …

Share your ideas about King County's trails and parks

If you ride the dirt and paved trails operated by King County (WA) Parks, you might want to participate in an online survey.

It takes about 10 minutes to fill out.

The park folks want to know how we use their facilities, what we like and don't like about them, and how we think they can be improved.

It can't …

Leaping to the lead at USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado

US cyclist Levi Leipheimer won Stage 1 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge on Tuesday as he took the yellow jersey with a perfectly timed final attack in Crested Butte.

While the peloton was gasping for air in at least a half dozen languages, the RadioShack cyclist dropped the leaders in the last third of a mile as they rode past 9,000 feet elevation.

Hard on his tail was Sergio Henao, 23, the Colombian cyclist whose Gobernación de Antioquia cycling team challenged the big leagues ….

Cavendish abandons Vuelta; Frenchman leads Spanish bike race

Two days after teammate Matt Goss abandoned the Vuelta a Espana with stomach flu, HTC-Highroad's sprinter Mark Cavendish retired on the second climb on Tuesday.

Perhaps it was too much climbing early in the 3-week race, or too much heat or the effects of the same bug that bothered Goss.

The mountaintop finish for Stage 4 wouldn't have suited Cavendish …

Enjoying the bike ride across Lake Washington

Sometimes I take for granted some of the great bicycling assets right in my own back yard.

One of those is the bike lane across the Interstate 90 Lake Washington bridge that links Seattle with the Eastside suburbs.

The proper name is the Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge, and the bike lane has been part of the bridge since it opened in 1989.

I discovered this bike lane on the westbound floating bridge soon after moving here 11 years ago. I use it on my occasional bike rides into Seattle or down to the ferry terminals for rides on the Olympic Peninsula.

Hundreds of bike commuters use it daily ….

A touch of class by winner of Vuelta's Stage 3

Spanish cyclist Pablo Lastras showed some class in his victories at the Vuelta a Espana on Monday by dedicating his ride to this year's fallen comrades in the peloton.

The 35-year-old on the Movistar cycling team beat breakaway companion Sylvan Chavanel (Quickstep) by 15 seconds in the sprint and took the overall leader's jersey after Stage 3 by a 20-second …
