1984 Bike Tour: Day 1 – Dude, where's my campground?
Pre-Ramble: Twenty-seven years ago today, my friend Bruce and I saddled up and rode our bicycles out of Yorktown, VA, headed to Carlsbad, California. It took us 11 weeks to ride the 3,998 miles from coast-to-coast.
We used to say that maybe one day we'd make the trip again. We don't say that anymore as we've aged and gotten more set in our ways. They've been a fixture at BikingBis.com every May, June and July since 2005, and I'll be posting them again.
If you don't care to follow along, it's easy enough to just skip them. Or you can read the introduction and see the index at TransAmerica Tour 1984….

Sprinters run out of gas in Giro's Stage 6 finish
Just 10 more pedal strokes. That's all Alessandro Petacchi needed in his legs to win the Stage 6 sprint of the Giro d'Italia on Thursday.
But after 134 miles in the saddle and a grueling climb to the finish in Fiuggi, he didn't have it.
Francisco Ventosa, at right, did. Attacking with about 500 yards to go, the Movistar sprinter drove until the end ….

“Share the Trail” in Renton (WA) on Saturday
Renton is hosting a “Share the Trail” event on the Cedar River Trail on Saturday to circulate information about the rules and trail etiquette that went into effect last summer.
In a nutshell, the city lowered the speed limit for bicycles to 10 mph and set a $101 fine for violations. It also painted a yellow line down the center of the trail and asks users to stay to the right of the line unless passing.
The parks department wants to make this Saturday event fun, so there will be booths with prizes and refreshments for all who attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ron Regis Park, Renton ….
