Take a virtual bike ride on Burke Gilman and Cedar River trails

Larger view on jump

The Google Street View trike has been hitting the bicycle trails in Seattle and King County over the past summer and now those trail views are available on Google Maps.

I mashed a couple of trails with the TripGeo.com application to animate the bike path views on the Burke-Gilman Trail between Gas Works and Log Boom parks, left, and the Cedar River Trail from Renton to Landsburg, below.

It's fun to see the locales of our off-road rides preserved on the Internet. Seattle Bike Blog located trail views outside the Seattle Google headquarters in Ballard and the Seattle end of the I-90 bike trail….

Bicyclists push back against proposed National parks and forests rule

Here we are in the second decade of the 21st century, and bicyclists are forced to petition their Senators to retain their legal rights to the road.

The draft Senate transportation authorization bill, perhaps misnamed “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act,” includes a provision that bans bicycle riders from park roads if there is a trail nearby.

What is it with the US Senate and bicycles?

Earlier this fall, two Senators on separate occasions offered amendments that would have removed federal funds for bicycle and pedestrian projects. Those measures …

The bicycle continued to be an important fund-raising tool in the fight against cancer in 2011.

Although figures aren't available from the scores of cancer-battling bicycle rides in 2011, three big ones alone raised more than $53 million.

The three — Pan Mass Challenge, Pelotonia, and the Livestrong Challenge series — brought together 19,000 bicycle riders in the fight against cancer. Congratulations to them all.

The amateur ride is scheduled on Saturday, April 28. The contested Stage 7 for the pros in the Tour of California is the penultimate stage and rolls out May 19.

Registration is due to open in December ….

Seattle voters reject car-tab fee that included bike projects

A proposal to raise $204 million for transportation projects over the next 10 years in Seattle, including bicycle infrastructure, failed on Tuesday.

Voters in the city resoundingly defeated the measure that would have required car owners to pay an extra $60 car tab fee per automobile.

Half of the money raised by the issue, Proposition 1, would have paid for …
