A problem with carbon cranksets has prompted Cannondale Bicycle to issue a recall for 2,900 bicycles that use the cranksets (road style — left; mountain bike style — right).
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commisson announcement on Wednesday, the crankset could break. Cannondale says there have been two reports of breaking cranksets and one minor injury. (Cannondale initially sent out its own announcement on this problem in April 2007; therefore the problem may have been resolved for most customers by now.)
This is the second recent recall for Cannondale. Last month, Cannondale issued a recall notice for 2007 and some 2008 mountain bikes equipped with either Lefty Speed Carbon SL or Lefty Speed DLR 2 forks. See the Cannondale fork recall press release. (Nothing from CPSC on that yet.)
In the crankset recall, consumers are urged to take the targeted bicycles (listed below) to Cannondale dealers, who will inspect the cranksets to determine if the customer needs a free replacement.
The cranksets, made in Taiwan, were sold between June 2006 and May 2007 at authorized Cannondale dealers on bicycles costing between $1,800 and $5,700. Separately the crankset cost $475.
The bikes comprising the recall are:
