World cyclist biking through New Zealand

From the looks of Daniel Lang's Project VELAIA website, this is an ideal season to be bicycle touring in New Zealand's autumn. Not too hot. Not too cold.

Lang is a 22-year-old, self-described “velosopher, environmentalist, and often minimalistic outdoor adventurer” who is nearly 16,000 miles into an around the world bike tour.

His website is worth a look for the wonderful pictures, like the one above, as well as the stories the German traveler is spinning from the road.

Road to Beijing

It all started last year with a recumbent tour from Paris to Beijing. Lang was counted as a member of the Beijing to Paris CarFree tour, even though he pedaled in the opposite direction. About 19 others undertook the trip by boat and train, but mainly bike.

You can read a summary of his adventures on the Paris to Beijing trip. Basically he toured central Europe, the Middle East, Tibet and China.

But Lang didn't stop in Beijing. He continued his journey to Australia where pedaled a big loop in the southeastern part of the country.

Somewhere along the way he switched his 'bent for a mountain bike. Now he's over to New Zealand, where his mountain bike allows him to explore via the many gravel roads.

Lang's website is in English and German. He gives some background about his tour, but most interesting are the regular blog posts, with many pictures, in his travelogue. He also posts pictures on his veloaia account at flickr.com, which is where I first stumbled across his tour when the pictures appeared in the BikingBis Feed Zone.

He's also posted more than a dozen short videos at YouTube.

So I'm going to bookmark his website so I can back and check out where in the world is David Lang next.
