Refering to city bike maps are a sure way to reduce the stress of cyclilng out into the road war ruled by automobiles.

City bike maps usually show routes designated as safe for cyclists, and the locations of bike lanes and bike paths.

Boca Raton, Florida, is spending $37,000 to print 10,000 bike maps that show 40 miles of bike lanes and 28 miles of bike paths through the city.

The map also rates roads for safety, gauging traffic volumes and availability of road shoulders.

George Martin, exec director of Safe Bicycling Coalition of Palm Beach County told the Palm Beach Post:

“These maps are great particularly for people who come from out of town… also for planning rides for groups. Otherwise people get into places that they might not have counted on the traffic or the type of roads. If you have a map, you can plan your ride ahead of time.”

In announcing the map project, the Palm Beach Post says that the League of American Bicyclists named Boca Raton as a bronze winner for being a bicycle friendly city. These types of project make it easy to see why Boca Raton was given that honor.
