Specialized Bicycle Components of Morgan Hill, California, is recalling 14,000 2009 model bicycles because of faulty handlebars and 3,000 2004 Roubaix Comp and Roubaix Pro bicycles because of faulty cable stops.
In each case, Specialized recommends that cyclists stop using the bicycles and take them in to their local bike shop for free repair and replacement …

Unseasonably warm temperatures in the 60s and 70s are hitting the Seattle area, but the high country along the North Cascades Highway still has plenty of snow.
Washington state highway snow-clearing crews working from the east have hit bare pavement on the way to the 5,477-foot Washington Pass on Highway 20.
They're trying to clear by May 1 arguably one of the nation's most spectacular stretches of highway. It's a big draw not only for motorists but for touring bicyclists.
The 50-some miles of Highway 20 between Mazama and Newhalem in the North Cascades National Park is featured in Adventure Cycling Association's Northern Tier and Washington Parks bicycle routes.
It's also a destination for many bicyclists riding alone or in groups who want to test their climbing abilities in rarified air ….

You may never have heard of Dutch cyclist Theo Bos before (I hadn't), but I'll bet you won't forget his name now.
The cyclist for Rabobank was involved in a crash on Sunday in the final meters of the Tour of Turkey that looks to all the world like he grabbed yellow-jersey wearer Daryl Impey of Barloworld and flung him to the ground.
Both Bos and Impey hit the deck. Impey eventually limped across the line to win the 8 stage Presidential Cycling Tour (Tour of Turkey), but he skipped the podium celebrations and is being monitored for a light fracture in a vertabra; he also lost a tooth.
Calls immediately came in for Bos to be suspended. Among those offered criticism were Lance Armstrong at his Twitter site:
“rewatched Bos crash 10x. Fences were uneven, sprint looked nervous/sketchy, but imo the hands should never come off the bars in a sprint..

Something I wanted to do when I visited Sacramento last winter was to explore the bicycle trail along the American River.
To rent a bicycle before I left, I had to search for bike shops, check if they were close to the trail, then call to compare prices and determine if they actually would have bicycles in stock.
Now a couple of midwestern cycling enthusiasts are making it easier for bicyclists who want to get a ride in on their business or pleasure trips. They've created an online service — RentABikeNow.com — that enables cyclists to rent bicycles in 144 cities in the U.S.
The one-stop online-shop connects cyclists with companies and shops that have bicycles for rent. The cyclist simply choses a destination and date, then compares types, sizes and costs of bikes that are offered by one or more shops. The reservation is made online …

Bicycling is changing the look and feel of cities, small towns and suburbs across the U.S., asserts Jeff Mapes in his new book, “Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists are Changing American Cities.”
Mapes should know. He's a reporter at the Portland Oregonian newspaper and has watched the rise of the bicycle culture in that city. He's experienced much of it firsthand as a bike commuter.
According to reviews and publicity (I haven't read the book yet), Mapes writes about big cities, college towns and Portland to show how cyclists are taking to the streets. He looks at the history of bicycle advocacy and reports on the many styles of people — congressmen, bike messengers, spandex-clad recreational riders — who are behind it.
In the introduction, Mapes writes …..

What's the best way to celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22? Ride your bicycle, of course.
I don't mean to carry it by car to the local bike path or Earth Day parade and go for a ride. I mean use your bicycle for transportation to get to work, run errands, or visit a friend.
Using a bicycle reduces the burning of fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases, which are responsible for climate change. End of sermon.
There are many Earth Day events being held this weekend and next weekend across the US. …

Just like that, Tyler Hamilton is out of professional cycling.
Admitting to testing positive to a banned substance, Hamilton said Friday that there's nothing to fight about. The 38-year-old cyclist said he's retiring from cycling immediately.
According to the AP and ESPN, Hamilton said he tested positive after taking an over-the-counter anti-depressant. He told the AP:
“There's nothing to fight about. I took a banned substance. I accept the consequences. You make mistakes in your life and I accept the penalty like a man.” …

Here's the nasty finish at the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen in Belgium on Wednesday via Cycling.tv. It just amazes me that this doesn't happen more often.
The good news was that Alessandro Petacchi won his first-ever race in Belgium with this sprint. The bad news is that seven riders were injured, among them Robbie McEwen (who broke a rib and was treated for a suspected concussion) and Tom Boonen.
In the aftermath, the first rider to go down, Greg Van Avermaet, blamed Petacchi for the crash. McEwen blamed Avermaet, who ran into him and started the chain reaction. …
