Spring bicycling opens in some national parks
Yellowstone National Park has opened newly snow-cleared sections of road to bicycles already this spring before reopening the routes to motor vehicles.
Glacier National Park in Montana is clearing snow off roads and expects to open them to cyclists soon.
Meanwhile, snow removal crews, left, from the Washington Department of Transportation on Monday began running snow plows along the North Cascades Highway that cuts through the North Cascades National Park in preparation for opening the road with mile-high passes.
It's one of the rites of spring in the western states where snowfalls bury roads with some of the most spectacular scenery for several months out of the year ..

If you rode a bicycle, you'd be home by now
Hitting the last leg of a bicycle ride near my home on a beautiful spring afternoon on Tuesday, I stumbled on this scene along southbound Interstate 405 between Bellevue and Renton.
Bumper-to-bumper freeway traffic crawling along as far as the eye could see, right next to a wide open bike lane.
I wondered if those people in the cars and trucks thought about what it would be like to ride along this stretch on a bicycle. They probably get to think about it a lot. This backup isn't uncommon here; it's pretty much a daily occurrence.
It got me to thinking about US Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood's announcement about a major policy revision that puts walking and bicycling on an equal footing ….

Suspected chop-shop bicycles sold on Craigslist
Did you buy a bicycle off Seattle's Craiglist recently from a guy who advertised “Road Bikes Galore!”?
You shouldn't be surprised that there's a very good chance the bike was stolen.
The latest stolen bicycle caper comes from a 10-by-10-foot storage unit in Seattle's Lake City neighborhood filled “floor to ceiling” with bikes and bike parts. Two suspects in the case apparently lived in the storage unit.
It doesn't rival the Toronto crime spree that scored nearly 3,000 bikes, but it's amazing by local standards ……

Oscar Freire fired up at Milan San Remo
Rabobank's Oscar Freire set up behind a couple of opposing Liquigas cyclists before exploding across the finish line at the 101st Milan – San Remo bicycle race in Italy on Saturday.
The sprint win marked the third victory at San Remo by the 34-year-old Spanish cyclist at the official opening of Europe's spring classics season.
He was followed closely across the finish line of the 185-mile race by Tom Boonen (Quickstep) and Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre).
Italy's Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) finished in 5th place; Freire set up behind Bennati …..

Armstrong confronts bicyclists' Public Enemy No. 1
When someone clued Lance Armstrong about comments made by the host of a sports call-in show, he didn't like what he heard. His reaction on Twitter:
“Disgusting, ignorant, foolish. What a complete f-ing idiot.”
The “f-ing idiot” was Tony Kornheiser, long-time sports commentator who had already been suspended from ESPN once this year for commenting on an outfit worn by a female co-anchor.
What drew Armstrong's anger was Kornheiser's comments about how motorists should hit bicyclists with their cars. He was running-off at the mouth ….

10 tips for bicycle touring from lessons learned the hard way
Editor's note: Every spring a whole new crop of bicycling fans are champing at the bit to take their first bicycle tour. While most have already read the standard “Top 10 tips” of bicycle touring somewhere, here's my personal suggestions gleaned from hard-learned lessons.
This is a reprint of a post buried in the bowels of my blog from several years ago. Most pointers are still true today:
1. Keep clean, especially your most tender parts. Cycling shorts are a heated petri dish for bacteria. Even if you're camping at a spot without showers, find a water spigot or head into a restroom to give yourself a good cleaning down below. A small pimple or rash can become an infection to rival anything found in the trenches of World War I. We talked to a couple who had to stop their tour the previous year because of such an infection ….
