RadioShack scalps the peloton on Mount Baldy

Here's a sight that not many would have predicted when bike race organizers announced the most difficult mountain stage ever in the Amgen Tour of California:

Three-time champion Levi Leipheimer setting the pace for yellow jersey leader Chris Horner in the final kilometers to the finish on Mount Baldy.

Their RadioShack teammates had destroyed the field by setting a high pace throughout the 80-mile Stage 7, and the last rivals had dropped off the back before Leipheimer and Horner rolled across the finish line with a victory salute.

Unless something goes horribly wrong in the final Stage 8, Horner looks to be assured of a victory ….

Giro d'Italia highest point in Sunday's Stage 15

Cyclists face the last of three summit finishes this weekend at the Giro d'Italia, and this one appears to be the most brutal.

Before battling to the summit of Gardeccia-Val di Fassa, the peloton has to ride 229km (143 miles) and pass over four Category 1 or 2 passes.

The third climb of the day is the Passo Giau, the highest point in this year's Giro. As such, the first cyclist over the top wins the Cima Coppi prize.

On the final climb, the cyclists face a 16% gradient in places ….

Contador chooses battles on Zoncolon summit at Giro d'Italia

Alberto Contador remained in control of the Giro d'Italia on the steep slopes of Monte Zoncolon on Saturday.

The Spanish cyclist let fellow countryman Igor Anton (Euskaltel Euskadi) escape to a Stage 14 victory, while denying help to second-place rival Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) as he marked the Italian's pace up the mountain.

The 170km (105 miles) bike race from Lienz to Monte Zoncolon was the second of three summit finishes planned for the weekend.

The route was shortened twice: once by 20km to remove the Monte Crostis descent, and another 20km to detour around fans …

Teammates vie for yellow jersey in Solvang

Sixth place was good enough for Chris Horner (Radio Shack) to hold onto the yellow jersey after Friday's individual time trial concluded in Solvang at the Amgen Tour of California.

Dave Zabriskie (left, Garmin Cervelo) won the stage, setting a record over the 15-mile course. The previous record holder, Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack) finished second, 14 seconds behind Zabriskie.

While Horner remained in 1st overall, he lost time to Leipheimer who now trails his teammate by 38 seconds. This could result in some interesting team tactics on the summit finish of Mt. Baldy on Saturday. ….

Great weather = super Bike to Work Day

Puget Sound area bicycle commuters — some riding to work for the first time — awoke to clear skies and warm temperatures for Friday's annual Bike to Work Day in the Seattle area.

At commuter stations in Bellevue, the better than normal weather in the Pacific Northwest meant a much better turnout than last year.

Michael Ingram, a senior planner in the city's transportation department, said that 500 bicyclists passed through the commute station at the base of the I-90 bridge (above) over Lake Washington between 6 and 9 a.m.

The story was the same throughout the region …
