A Gonzaga University law student is getting a lesson that hit and run is illegal.

The motorist is charged with running over a bike trailer carrying a 2-year-old girl in the Millwood suburb of Spokane (WA) on Saturday. She remains in intensive care with a fractured skull.

Timmy Nguyen, 22, appeared in court on Monday facing charges of hit and run and vehicular assault. A blood sample has been submitted for testing, and Nguyen is due back in court in August.

The Spokesman Review reports that the girl’s father, Danny Packard, was towing the trailer when a 2003 Honda Element turned a corner too wide and ran over it. The driver didn’t stop, but witnesses followed the car and confronted the driver at his residence.

The newspaper reports:

“Nguyen was having trouble standing on his own when police arrived and cried after he was arrested, deputies said. … He declined to talk to investigators but repeatedly asked if he was under arrest and told them he was a law student.”

The student is interning this summer with Spokane lawyer Mark Vovos, who said he wants to represent him.
