Trek and Scott recall 125,000 bikes with faulty suspension forks

Bike makers Trek and Scott USA issued a recall on 26 different 2011 – 2013 bike models earlier this week after realizing the SR Suntour suspension forks can break.

Trek received 28 reports of broken forks, leading to five injuries such as broken bones and bruises. Scott received one report of a broken fork.

The two bike makers and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission urge owners to get the forks repaired or replaced at a dealer free of charge.


The bikes were manufactured in China and Taiwan.

Trek

The recall for Waterloo, Wis.-based Trek comprises 120,000 bikes across 11 models.

The Treks have disc brakes and either the Suntour NEX, NRX, XCM or XCT front fork suspensions. The bike model names are located on the top tube, and the serial numbers are located under the bottom bracket. Serial numbers ending in F, G or H should be inspected.

The Treks cost between $600 and $1,370 and were sold from May 2010 to June 2014.

Scott USA

As for Ketchem, Idaho-based Scott USA, the recall covers some 5,200 bikes across 13 models. They all have 700c wheels, disc brakes and NEX or NCX Sontour suspension forks.

They were sold at bike stores from October 2010 to November 2013 for between $450 and $1,100.
