Where old-time cyclists used to find support
A standard — but usually unseen and unsung — piece of athletic gear in many sports is the common jock strap.
Although I doubt that any cyclists wrapped up in lycra and chamois these days would consider using one, the jock strap was created to support bicycle riders.
While visiting a museum on Orcas Island this past week, I stumbled across this antique box for a Jockey Strap Suspensory. It was in a collection of early 20th Century items found in a home's private dispensary.

Sky cyclist Chris Sutton wins Stage 2 sprint at Vuelta
Chris Sutton took advantage of a disorganized sprint into Playas de Orihuela on Sunday to win Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Espana.
The cyclist for Team Sky followed Vincente Reynes's (Omega Pharma) attack in the closing quarter-mile, then raced around him for his first Grand Tour stage win.
Wenatchee, WA's Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervelo) finished in fourth place.
The day's …

USA Pro Cycling Challenge roster
Here's the tentative roster for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge as supplied recently by race organizers.
The Colorado-based bicycle race begins Monday in Colorado Springs and runs through Sunday after visiting some the state's most best bicycle-racing areas.
The inaugural race is drawing cyclists with impressive recent histories. Note for instance the top three finishers of the Tour de France will be racing — Cadel Evans (Australia), Andy Schleck and Frank Schleck (both Luxembourg).

Teams battle in first contest at Vuelta a Espana
Four US cyclists took the starting line at the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday for the team time trial as the three-week-long bicycle race began in the coastal city of Benidorm.
None of the Americans landed in the Top 10, as Leopard-Trek won the event with a 5-second gap over Liquigas-Cannondale.
Although Leopard's Fabian Cancellara set the pace for his team, the overall leader's jersey went to teammate Jakob Fuglsang ….

Where your bike lock might be worth more than the bicycle
My son is heading to China for his fall semester and I stumbled across some information about getting around by bicycle in Beijing in his student handbook.
The book says bikes are still very useful for going short distances in the cities. They're not expensive and “if you plan to stay for more than a semester, it may be wise to invest in one.”
That's apparently what a person who is selling her bike at TheBeijinger.com did. That bike is selling for 350 yuan, about $50-$55. It comes with that sweet front basket decorated with the butterfly, above …
