Celebrating the first USA Pro Cycling Challenge

A German cyclist riding for the soon-to-be defunct HTC-Highroad team earned a host of firsts racing in Colorado Springs on Monday.

Patrick Gretsch, 24, finished in first place on the first day of the first USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The victory marked his first-ever win on US soil.

The German covered the ever-so slightly downhill course in Colorado Springs in 8-minutes-27, 2 seconds ahead of Christian Vande Velde of Team Garmin Cervelo.

Gretsch will wear the leader's jersey on Tuesday, although it's doubtful he'll wear it for long. Stage 1 is a 99-mile uphill slog ….

USA Pro Cycling Challenge roster

Here's the tentative roster for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge as supplied recently by race organizers.

The Colorado-based bicycle race begins Monday in Colorado Springs and runs through Sunday after visiting some the state's most best bicycle-racing areas.

The inaugural race is drawing cyclists with impressive recent histories. Note for instance the top three finishers of the Tour de France will be racing — Cadel Evans (Australia), Andy Schleck and Frank Schleck (both Luxembourg).

After Levi Leipheimer's win at the Tour of Utah two weeks ago, Team RadioShack …

Teams battle in first contest at Vuelta a Espana

Four US cyclists took the starting line at the Vuelta a Espana on Saturday for the team time trial as the three-week-long bicycle race began in the coastal city of Benidorm.

None of the Americans landed in the Top 10, as Leopard-Trek won the event with a 5-second gap over Liquigas-Cannondale.

Although Leopard's Fabian Cancellara set the pace for his team, the overall leader's jersey went to teammate Jakob Fuglsang ….
