Seeking funds for conservation education in Tanzania
A bicyclist from Tanzania who is on a two-year-long solo world bike tour will be rolling into Issaquah (WA) next week.
Elvis Munis is on his way up from Portland, where he stopped as part of his quest to raise enough money to pay for college degrees in conservation studies for himself and 9 countrymen.

Header photos described at Biking Bis
When I redesigned my Biking Bis blog for WordPress last spring, I activated a feature that rotates through several images for the header whenever someone accesses a page.
Recently, a reader asked me where those photos were taken because she’d like to ride in those places. That’s a great idea.
Photos can be motivating to someone …

Ride in peace, Roger Kramer
I’m very unhappy this morning to report the death of bicycle advocate, newspaperman and fellow bike blogger Roger Kramer of Belleville, Illinois.
The Belleville News-Democrat, where he worked for 20 years as a design editor and copy editor, reports that he died of natural causes at his home on Saturday. He was 51.
I knew …

Helping a bike traveler in dire straits
The story in the Evansville Courier-Press of a man who “adopted” a foreign bicycle traveler recovering from a traffic collision is one of those that restores my faith in humanity.
Thomas Persson had come to the US last year from Sweden to ride his Surly Long Haul Trucker from the Washington DC area to San …

In the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy across the East Coast this week, the bicycle has emerged as the most reliable form of transportation.
So many people have turned to bicycles in New York City, that one public radio commentator said some city streets look like those in Amsterdam.
The flooding of subway tunnels …

The American Red Cross is seeking cash donations to help people suffering from the ravages of Hurricane Sandy.
The nonprofit relief agency already has opened emergency shelters in seven states where it’s making space available for persons displaced by the storms and distributing food and other necessities.

Best places to work or learn if you ride a bicycle
Do you often feel like there is something missing from your job or college education — like your bicycle?
For the past several years, the League of American Bicyclists has been naming bicycle friendly employers and universities in the same categories as it lists bicycle friendly communities; namely platinum, gold, silver and bronze.
This fall, the bicycling advocates added 71 new Bicycle Friendly Businesses to its list, as well as nine new Bicycle Friendly Universities. …

Virginia is for bicyclists — map available
If you ask me, all the bicycle routes, bicycle paths or bicycle lanes are useless if they’re not on a map so people can find and follow them.
The folks at the Virginia Department of Transportation must think the same way as they’ve released an updated version of the Commonwealth of Virginia Bicycling in Virginia …
